Reflecting on the success of ERRS 2024 in Aveiro, Portugal
The European Radiation Research Society (ERRS) 2024 Conference was the 48th conference that brought together the global radiation research community in the stunning city of Aveiro, Portugal, from September 10th to 13th. Known as the "Venice of Portugal," Aveiro’s picturesque canals, colorful moliceiros, and charming Art Nouveau architecture provided a truly inspiring and beautiful setting for this remarkable gathering.
A diverse and dynamic program
ERRS 2024 delivered a compelling scientific program, including:
-
4 plenary speakers and 15 keynote addresses.
-
90 oral presentations and 50 poster sessions.
-
Sessions covering cutting-edge topics in fields as diverse as space radiation, radiation protection, environmental monitoring, and clinical advancements in radiopharmaceuticals.
-
Special highlights, such as the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) session, a Ukraine-focused discussion, and the Bacq & Alexander Award session.
For the first time in ERRS history, the European Space Agency (ESA) presented an award to young researchers in space radiation, marking a significant milestone in recognising emerging talent in this critical field. Additionally, six short courses provided attendees with hands-on learning opportunities in molecular effects of radiation, computational dosimetry, societal aspects of radiation protection, and more.
Empowering the next generation
The conference saw the official launch of the NGenR2 network (Next Generation of Radiation Researchers), aimed at fostering collaboration and growth among early-career scientists. A fun and engaging "meet & greet" event marked this inaugural moment, offering young researchers a platform to connect and share ideas in an informal setting.
The ERRS also handed out awards for the Young Investigators that have made significant contributions accross the Radiation Research field.
Collaboration across borders
195 participants came from more than 30 countries - from the United States and Japan to Egypt and South Africa - ofc course, with a large majoirity from Europe. Ths diversity highlights once again ERRS’ commitment to fostering an inclusive and globally connected research community.
Engaging social activities
ERRS 2024 wasn’t just about science—it was also a celebration of connections. Highlights included:
